It accurately shows the effects of bullying and how depression may affect a person as well. While this may sound like a “basic and predictable” plot, the movie deals with darker subjects as well, such as depression. While Shoya becomes friends with Shoko, he reunites with old classmates and meets new faces as well, becoming friends with them. Then, when Shoya is in high school, it is revealed that he has learned sign language, and when he unexpectedly spots Shoko in the hallway of the school, he decides to attempt and become friends with Shoko. However, when Shoko transfers out of the school due to the bullying, Shoya’s previous friends begin to bully him and later ends up isolated from others. To simplify the plot of the movie: A Silent Voice revolves around the main character Shoya Ishida, a troublesome boy that in grade school bullied Shoko Nishimiya, a new deaf classmate. Before I continue, I will note that this will be spoiler-free review so if you have not seen the movie yet, you will not be spoiled while reading this review. While the manga series ended in 2014, the film adaptation was released in Japan in 2016, 2017 worldwide. The movie, A Silent Voice, or in Japanese, Koe no Katachi, is a 2 hour film based on the manga by Yoshitoki Oima.
